TRAINING

HQMA offers a FREE training program for any child wishing to become a quarter midget racer.  Training is required for all new drivers and must be attended prior to racing in any event at a QMA track.

We have 2 training classes:  Jr. Novice and Sr. Novice. Our Jr. Novice class is designed for children from the ages of 5 to 8 and the Sr. Novice is for children from the ages of 9 through 16.

HQMA will provide the necessary training equipment for those interested. Equipment used consists of a helmet, neck collar, race jacket or suit and the quarter midget car.

If you are interested in training, please contact the training director, Bill Ondocsin, at (256)527-1737 or email him at ope28@aol.com for
more information.

The following goals must be achieved during training sessions before a driver will be eligible to compete in a QMA race:

  1. Consistant laps times (preferably below 12 seconds per lap)
  2. Demonstrate the ability to come into the pits and stop in a pit stall.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to line up in various positions for double line up and single line up.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to follow flagging by the flag person.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to cleanly enter the track from the pits (blend line).
  6. Demonstrate proper response to hand signals.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to take the checkered flag from the flag person at the end of a race.

All handlers must attend the training sessions.

Have fun, be safe and good luck to everyone!

NOVICE Procedures:

  1. Novice will receive an orange card after joining QMA.  After completing Novice training the appropriate form will be sent to QMA National office.  National will then issue a PURPLE card to that driver.  This will be used for 1 year of competition in a competitive class.   After 1 year  a white card will be issued to the driver after approval from Novice committee and regional director.  All dates for transfer from orange to purple to white card will be kept in the QMA database at National headquarters.
  2. Log books must be filled out and the Novice committee members watch the Novice races.  If log books are not completed with notes & dates of races, novices will not be issued their purple cards.  Novice must have the purple card in order to move into a competitve class.
  3. Novice competes on a 2 month schedule.  After 2 months in Novice, a driver must be moved up or the appropriate form filled out and sent to National for a 2 month extension.  Only under extreme circumstances should drivers be allowed to compete in Novice past 4 months of competition.
  4. Jr and Sr Novice can be ran together if there are no more than 4 of each and a maximum car count of 8.
